I enjoyed your blog.

Good luck to your friend. Encourage her to read widely, write every day and submit to a variety of publications.

You never know when you will send in something that will connect with an editor.

Congratulations, Fiona!! I know it must be a wonderful feeling! You inspire me to try to get something published. After I write something that I think could work for a magazine, I have the bad habit of setting it aside with the intention of submitting it but then I don't. I'm going to!!! I can't wait to read your story!
Do you think it is better to submit outright, or to enter contests?

Aleta, with some contests, there is an entry fee. If the contest offers good feedback, or some other perk, that may be worth while.

However, some "contests" are money-makers. They charge much more in entry fees than they spend on admin. & prizes. Buyer beware! Go with something established.

I was "taken in" by a contest last Spring. I think everyone who entered was given an "honorable mention" and no $. The winners (top 3) were never published--the online entity sponsoring the contest folded.

Writers' groups are a good place to look--The RWA has local chapters and they offer great encouragement and support, good classes and regional conferences. You don't need to be a Romance writer to join. They are VERY supportive of writers of all backgrounds.

Writer's Digest often lists competitions, too.

There are also websites for writers (free) which offer critiques. You have to be willing to critique other peoples' stuff. It is helpful, but can be time-consuming, and you really don't want to post something that you may want to publish later.

Good luck.
