LOOKING FOR A GOOD BOOK

It's Spring Break for my kids. We are kicking back, having a STAYCATION. I love it.

Youngest son is much improved. He's not taking pain medicine and is looking forward to pizza and subs in the the not-too-distant-future. I think it may be YEARS before he has chicken broth, jello or popsicles again. LOL

Oldest son is thrilled to have NO HOMEWORK, and to be able to play lacrosse with his friends every day.

DH and I like the late mornings, even though he has to work, we're not getting up at 6 to get the kids off to school. Sleeping in until 8 is wonderful.

My shingles are almost gone--yea!

BUT...

I'm looking for a good book to read. I want to sit out in the sun, in the garden with my shelties, and read.

I've started and stopped 7 books. I've tried fiction (mystery, thriller, historical fiction, SF and romance) and nonfiction (history, biography) but nothing seems to strike me.

Are you reading anything good? What suggestions do you have for me to read during our Spring Break?

Late post today.

I'm very thankful today that my son's surgery went well and he is home. He had his tonsils and adenoids out.

My heartfelt thanks go out to the doctors, nurses, iv team, lab techs and everyone else who cared for my child and who works behind the scenes to make the hospital function.

They work long hours, deal with things most of us would rather not see, and do it in a caring, professional manner.

My niece and her husband are expecting their first baby this summer. Along with starting baby’s library (check it out and give me some more suggestions!) I made a crib blanket.
Other than a few prayer shawls, I haven't done much crocheting in the past few years. After a couple of false starts, it came together.

My nephew and his wife recently told us they are expecting their first child in the fall. I started their baby's blanket as soon as I completed this one.

I'll get busy on the needlework for the babies' rooms when the next blanket is done.

Christmas is going to be soooooo fun this year, with two new children in the family.

I was surprised to learn that not every place in Canada accepts US health insurance. I had not thought about what to do when a natural disaster strikes when you're on vacation far from home.

This summer is going to involve several trips for our family, so I printed out the info and will keep a copy of it with me when we travel.

THANKFUL THURSDAY--SIGNS OF SPRING

With almost two feet of snow still on the ground, I needed a little SPRING in my life.

DH sent some to me while he was away on a business trip to Texas. I love to see the stalks shoot up from the dirt and explode in flowers. The crocuses just faded, and most of the tiny daffodils have opened. Soon there will be hyacinths and tulips. Each morning I get up and check my "garden." I love daffodils and plant lots of them, because the deer don't eat them and they spread each year.

Skitter kitten sat still just long enough for me to fit her with some Spring attire. The ribbon is now shredded, as all ribbon tied to her is destined to be.

THANKFUL THURSDAY: my office

When Dh and I started our remodel project last year, one of my "must haves" was a home office. A place to write, a place to think a place to read, a place to be. (vase and votive were estate sale finds, and look like the "real thing")

We share the space. Often we work there at different times. I'm there during the day and sometimes I'm alone there for hours.

He uses it mainly as an office-away-from-work, and stores things there he wants to keep, but doesn't need to have at hand at work.
My side has reference books, useful supplies and a handy jar of dog/cat treats. I have a pillow in my chair that I bought in SF last year, when I went to a writers' conference there.
In the corner, I have some plants and a fountain. I love the sound of the water and having living things sharing the space.

Skitter Kitten has a favorite spot in the desk to sleep, Baby and Scooby come in and out, mostly for the treats I keep in a jar on the desk. Mr Whiskers is still getting used to the room and visits to scratch on the scratching pad. None of them wanted to pose for this entry.

Since we set up the office, I've written more, read more, and felt more in tune with my writing. I'm so thankful to have a place I can call my own for writing.

This is one of the things I enjoy about winter--the leaves are gone and I can get a better view of the birds.

Lately, I've been getting impatient for Spring--the seed catalogs are arriving two or three a day, the days are getting longer, it's time to think about summer camps for my boys, and the stores have swimsuits and Easter outfits displayed!

I'm daydreaming about moving the raspberries, redesigning the herb garden, and what sort of exotic peppers YOUNGEST SON and I can plant in the front garden.

With all of the snow, wind, and cold weather, it's nice to have something like this to remind me of the joys of winter.

It's a good thing, too, because my right hand is sprained and it's difficult to type and write.

So much for the goal of writing lots every day--in a week or so I should be able to resume writing a couple of hours a day.

I'm going to keep myself accountable with my new blog.

This blog will remain active, and the "2010" blog will be my writing journal. I'm sure there will be overlap.

My plan is to record goals, DAILY progress, and discuss my writing process.

The four of us celebrated Christmas at home this year--the first time in a couple of years. It was so nice to wake up in our home, open presents in our new family room, and have a quite dinner.

The next day, we hit the road and drove to see both of my DH's brothers and their families. My S-I-L in Illinois had her tree beautifully decorated. Her home is so tasteful, and comfortable. She goes out of her way to make us feel welcomed whenever we visit.

On the way to Illinois, we stopped in Wisconsin to see my DH's middle brother. His adult son and daughters were there from Philly, Milwaukee, and Chicago. We had not seen all of them together for two years, so it was a treat. My B-I-L received a full-sized replica of a skeleton as his Christmas present from his wife and kids. My children had to have it in the family picture. Someone decided it was naked, and needed some clothes.

Seventeen years ago, my DH and I moved to the midwest. It was the perfect job for him, and we were only 7 hours from his parents and oldest brother, and only 3 hours from his middle brother.

Of course, that put us half a continent away from my extended family. I had never lived north of Baltimore before, and had only been west of the Mississippi once.

This was a very difficult Christmas for me because my parents, sister, b-i-l, niece and nephew and their spouses were all together for Christmas and we couldn't be there. It will be the last time all of them are together for Christmas for a long time, since my niece and her husband leave next week for Oahu, and will be there for three years.

I miss being close to my sister and parents. We talk and email frequently, but it's not the same as seeing each other and celebrating holidays and milestones together.

Fortunately for me, my sisters-in-law have been kind and loving, welcoming me into their family and helping me adjust to life in the great white north.

I am grateful for all of my family and the time we are able to share.

My New Year's Day post, and list of resolutions will appear later.

White Wednesday, Christmas present edition

I usually "wrap" presents in gift bags. My kids don't think it's much fun, but I love being able to reuse the bags and hate the waste of paper.

This year, I came up with a compromise. I wrapped boxes we can reuse (mostly shoe boxes because the boys seem t outgrow their shoes every other month) and bought pretty ribbon, too.

I found some "carry out" style boxes that hold little treasures.

And a couple of large white boxes for bigger gifts.

We can store Christmas decorations in the boxes and reuse them, the ribbon and even the gift tags next year.

Everyone was happy with this idea.

During this last week before Christmas, among the last of the shopping, wrapping, baking and letter-writing, Baby reminded me to slow down.

I put down my list, which has grown to epic proportions this week, and enjoyed the tree and Christmas music.

Skitter Kitten sat on the arm my chair and purred.

My oldest son was out playing in the snow, and my youngest son was practicing piano.

Peace, in our homes, in our towns, in our countries, and in ourselves--that is my wish for Christmas.

Thankful Thursday 12/17/09

Old friends are one of my greatest treasures. They know my past, including my mistakes, and accept me for who I am. They are the ones who can share my joys, console me in times of crisis, and give me great advice. I am so fortunate for my decades-old friendships.

My friends who live close by have been a great support. We don't have any relatives closer than 4 hours away, so I have been able to rely on local friends to help in times of trouble, and to celebrate holidays and family milestones.

Even though many friends are in different parts of the country, we keep in touch. Sometimes we plan vacations together, or visit each other. Those are special times. Thank goodness for email, and free weekend calling on my cell phone so we can chat and share photos between visits.

I enjoy making new friends, too. The internet has given me some great new cyber-friends. Blogging and emailing are wonderful for someone who works at home like me.

I'm so thankful for my friends.

Season? Fall. I love the colors.

Thankful Thursday 12/10/09

This past Sunday, we had a tree-trimming party and invited friends and neighbors. We had a wonderful time. It gave me a chance to reflect on how fortunate we are to have so many special people in our lives.

We moved to MN 17 years ago, from FL. I had never lived in the midwest but my DH grew up in this part of the country. We were hours away from our closest family (DH's) and very far from my extended family.

Fortunately, DH had some friends from college nearby, and we have some very nice neighbors. They have included us in their family events and celebrations and we have never felt lonely.

This year, we invited the friends of our children, and the friends' families. Now we have new friends to enjoy.

After the tree was decorated, we all enjoyed coffee or punch and cookies. I had the kitchen table set up as a cookie decorating station. It was the most fun I have had in a long time.

This Thankful Thursday, I'm so thankful for the friends who have made MN a great place to live and raise our children.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.........

It's WHITE WEDNESDAY, inside and out.

This is the first nativity scene DH and I had. It's made of paper and folds flat in an envelope---perfect for a young couple with little storage and even less money.

My dear S-I-L gave us this tree about 10 years ago. It came with red and green balls and we kept it decorated that way for years. After enjoying so many of everyone's WHITE WEDNESDAY posts, I decided to add a little more white to my decorating.

This is on our four-season porch, and I love the way the sun plays on the ornaments.

As I looked around our house, I found a few more winter whites.

Yes, that is a cotton garland on the bookcase. I found it at a small shop, and laughed until it hurt. I grew up in the south, and in early November, the fields were beautiful--white with cotton. It's a sight I don't get in Minnesota.

One of my orchids brings a tropical touch to the winter landscape.

Outside, we finally have our white, too. Yesterday we had a real Minnesota snow storm, and it painted the yard with a lovely white.

I am so thankful for ADVENT, and for the time each evening when we light our Advent candle.

This time of year is often cluttered with shopping, cooking, parties and other must-dos. While each can be a pleasure or a chore, depending on how overwhelmed I'm feeling at the time, sitting down to dinner with my family and lighting the advent candle gives us all a chance to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and prepare our hearts for Christmas.

WHITE WEDNESDAY

A little WHITE WEDNESDAY whimsy from my china cabinet.

This china was my M-I-L's second-best china. The best went to the oldest granddaughter, who graciously hosts many family events. The everyday china went to my S-I-L who is married to DH's oldest brother.

I was thrilled to get this set. We use it only for special guests at small dinners--we only have 8 place settings.

When we began decorating for Christmas on Sunday, I planned to add quite a bit of white and silver to the trimmings. This is new for me. We usually have so much snow outside that the thought of more inside made me feel cold.

When I started following Annie at THE BUNNY BUNGALOW, I learned the joys of decorating with white.

Even though few of my every day decorations are white, I am planning to incorporate more white in the future.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

So many reasons to give thanks......

......better health, my wonderful DH and our kids, special friends and many more blessings than I can count, but I'm going to list a few new things that I am especially thankful for this year.

Our remodeling project is done and turned out better than we had hoped. It took longer, and cost more than we expected, but we love the results and hope to enjoy them for many, many years.

I had my first short story published. Yeah me! I have sent out a couple more and the novel is in the works, along with two other short stories. I know I need more "butt in the chair" time. Something to work on.

A few healthier lifestyle changes---eating MUCH better, down to one cup of coffee a day and exercising a little more. Another thing to work on.

Increased social circle. This is a big one. New people, new perspectives, and getting out more. I needed this.

Reading a wider variety of books. This has been fantastic. There are so many good writers out there and I had been missing them.

Thanksgiving Prep

Scooby may enjoy a few nibbles on Thursday, but the house-cleaning today is hard for her to take.

The dinner will just be for our immediate family. We didn't invite any guests because Dh is working in the evening. It will be a simple meal. I have three new recipes to try---for the sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts and pumpkin pie. We'll see how it goes. I'll try to remember to post photos and recipes, if they turn out.

Why did I do this? I looked at this one evening, then checked on my sleeping children. Then I went out the next week and had 13 inches cut off.

Last week I did it again. It took three years to grow out a foot. It took over an hour to pull the gray hairs out of the pony tail. I may not be able to do it again in three years--the gray may have won by then.

Snow, not leaves, is falling.

Mother Nature is playing a joke.

Three inches of snow, and the leaves haven't fallen yet. My silver maple hasn't begun to change color.

The shelties have enjoyed spending all morning outside and are thanking me for providing them with lots of white stuff to eat and play in. I'm sure a snowman will appear as soon as my kids get home from school.

And where are all of the squirrels? Mr. Whiskers is confused.We woke up yesterday to our first snowfall this season. More is expected tonight. I love snow, but not this early. I still have peonies and bulbs to plant.

SIGH.

On the bright side, it will give me more time to write tomorrow.

Rituals

When I'm reading or writing, I enjoy lighting a candle

and sipping a cup of tea.

There is something comforting, focusing, about these rituals. I find I am able to give myself over completely to the world I am entering.

I experienced a fascinating new world in LIAR, by Justine Larbalestier. I reserved it at my favorite local bookstore after reading the fantastic reviews.

I want to avoid revealing any spoilers, so I will keep this simple--READ THIS BOOK.

It is an amazing work of fiction. The book is distributed as a YA novel, but I found it sophisticated in plotting and character. After reading it, I had the same feeling I had after seeing THE SIXTH SENSE the first time--wow. I wanted to reread this book right away, re examine the "clues" and re experience the writing.

I enjoyed it just as much the second time, reading it in my quiet corner.

Reading wonderful fiction inspires me. Time to work on my own world-building.

Lazy Saturday

It's cold and rainy, a perfect excuse to spend the afternoon reading. I am rereading an old favorite today, after spending part of last week reading my book club's selection (not the WHAT I'M READING on the sidebar, I'm enjoying that, too) and needing a reward stronger than chocolate for completing a book I HATED!

The book shall remain nameless. It was wildly popular and several of my friends have told me how much they loved it. It was near the bottom of my TBR pile, but promptly became the top of the heap when I joined a book club this summer.

For years I had consistently refused to join a book club, because I only wanted to read WHAT I PICKED. I joined this group because I like the people in it. AND, I thought it would be good for me to read more outside of my comfort zone. The book club has been a great experience, but not always for the reasons I imagined.

The very best part of the book club, aside from the great people and fantastic dessert, was watching the other members when they discussed this book. People were passionate. They loved it or hated it for a variety of reasons. They brought several of the characters to life for me more convincingly than the author.

As a writer, this was a goldmine. I learned so much about how people READ.

You have no idea how much I look forward to the discussion at our next meeting.

Beauty is where you find it

Several years ago, my parents purchased an acreage near the farm where my mother was raised. They have a lovely garden, a couple of terriers, and a peekapoo they inherited from my Grandmother. Dad found an old John Deere and they were enjoying life out of the city.

Except.

There was something Dad wanted. He had wanted it for YEARS. He couldn't explain it, but over time it became more and more important. He just had to have.....goats.

GOATS?

Introducing Joe and....

Billy. (really, Billy)

My mother was less than thrilled. Bless her for her patience. She comes home and the sweet potatoes are gone or half of the apples are missing---the goats needed a treat.

Recently, my parents were at the farmers' market. They were buying things that were past season in their garden, and things the garden didn't produce enough of, or they can't grow. My Mom was ready to pay, when my Dad appeared with 2 sweet potatoes.

They began to argue in front of everyone.

"Put those back, we don't need them."

"I want these."

"NO. We have some at home. I'm not getting any more."

And so it went. My Dad grew louder (as he does), his voice echoing off the produce, and my Mom got more stubborn. The cashier looked increasingly uncomfortable. As Dad put the sweet potatoes back, my Mom faced the cashier.

Talk about a frozen look.

My Mom quickly explained, "He wanted them for his goats."

More frozen look.

The goats got their sweet potatoes.

Now, my Mom tells me what beautiful goats they are, how smart they are, and how they follow my Dad like puppies.

I have a friend who is going to paint Joe and Billy's portrait for a Christmas present for my parents.

A sure sign of Fall

When my children were little, the front garden was full of edible plants. I wanted to keep the kids safe, and teach them about herbs. When they were a little older, I added edible flowers, too. All of the neighborhood kids knew anything growing by the front doors was fair game. One of them came back from college this summer and stopped by to pick day lilies, dill, and chives. I used to gather them in the morning for our evening salad and she would help.

Yesterday afternoon, it was 80, but the harbinger of Fall was there in my garden. My garlic chives, thyme, oregano, and dandelions, were buzzing with activity.

The garden has been rather neglected this summer. Indoor projects, travel, and writing, have taken my attention. So we are overrun with garlic chives. I was going to dig most of them out, but never found the time. I'm so glad I didn't.

In the evening, I happened on a different sort of wild life. Skitter Kitten found the perfect place to nap--on the new-to-me vintage tea table cloth I found at an estate sale.

Lund, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark

DH and I fell in love with Sweden! He had a conference in Lund, Sweden, and I had a week to explore.

I went every day to the 11th century Lund Cathedral. Each time I went, I was amazed by the beautiful space.

One day I stumbled on the remains of a 10th century church.

Our lunches were whatever we gleaned from the local farmers' market. It provided us with food....

...entertainment...

...snacks, and something to brighten the minimalist decor of our hotel room.

Every meal was incredible. Who knew herring could be so beautiful? And edible?

There were flowers everywhere. Abundant flower shops...

...tiny gardens...

...and decorative carvings on buildings.

The architecture was a delight. So many unexpected animals.

Even the streets were beautiful.

Bikes were the transportation of choice. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see the mail delivered by bike.

One free afternoon we spent in Copenhagen. We enjoyed the unique architecture...

...found a modern art exhibit..

...and were serenaded by the football enthusiasts.

Everywhere we went, Lund, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam, had the good taste to have Karen Rose's KILL FOR ME.

Unfortunately, we had to go home.

Pups and...

...kitties were waiting. Soon we'll be forgiven.

I read this ever summer. My favorite novel.

THREE CUPS OF TEA by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
WOW. How did I go so long without reading this? I've given copies as gifts.

INTO THIN AIR and INTO THE WILD by Jon Krakauer
My oldest son loved INTO THIN AIR and wanted something else by the author. I had to read them, because he raved about them. The writing is excellent. I don't always agree with the author's POV intruding in the the telling of ITW. I want to read THE CLIMB to get another perspective on ITA.

PEONY IN LOVE by Lisa See
Perfect summer reading. An adult fairy tale. I read it on the dock by the lake last week.

Sunday afternoon at the Zoo and Henry update

I've written about my friend's son, Henry, here, here, and here. Sunday, we got to visit him. The rehab hospital is fantastic and Henry is improving a little each day. When we were there, he was playing in an air hockey tournament with some friends from school.

We took his brothers out to the Minnesota Zoo.

I always wish I had taken more pictures when I go there.

The first daffodils of the season--from the grocery store. None in the yard, yet. The snow is still melting. I truly love Minnesota, but this cold, snowy winter has been LONG. Cabin fever abounds.

Three weeks from today we leave to visit my parents in sunny (I hope) Florida. Once we get back, there should be daffodils and early tulips in the garden. I can smell damp earth when I go outside, and I am impatient to dig, plant herbs, divide hosta .......

I think some of my houseplants may get repotted next week----I really need to play in the dirt.

My youngest son had school off today--it was parent-teacher conference day since report cards came out yesterday, and we had some time this morning to do something fun. We started the day by picking out birthday presents for one of his friends.

We have a strict rule in our house that books=birthday presents. This usually doesn't meet with an argument if we get to shop at
Wild Rumpus, our favorite bookstore. The best part of going there is taking my kids. They love the cats (Sumo is their favorite) and the chickens are too funny. Today, we got to pet the chinchilla!

Then, we drove around Lake Harriet

and watched the snow melting. I'm looking forward to seeing it green again, and going to summer concerts at the bandshell.

Our last stop was for ice cream at Sebastian Joe’s . I had the peaches&cream. YUM.

Friends.......

Over the past couple of weeks I have had tremendous support from many friends. I know it's cliche (but they are cliches because they contain truth) that you don't really know who your friends are until things aren't going well.

Today it's my turn to give a little back. I've been writing about my friend's son, Henry, and his accident and injury. He's in rehab now, and doing much better. Today was his first day in the pool, and he was able to move his leg on his weak side.

Well, some mutual friends set up a Wiki so all of us can sign up to help with meals and other things for the family. Today is my day to do dinner for their family. I signed up a week after the accident, and this was the first day I could get, because so many friends, acquaintances, and friends of friends had signed up, too.

I was amazed to see how many people were willing to help. WOW.

I'm surrounded by kind, generous people and I'm so thankful for them.

Perspective

Last week, we had a typical spring Minnesota snow storm--blowing snow leading to white-outs, and about 8 inches of new snow on the ground. School was on time the next day and life went on as usual. The kids and the shelties were thrilled with the weather. Today, it's going to hit 40. My kids will refuse to wear their coats after school. My teenager is going to demand to wear shorts. I have windows open. Such is life in the Great White North.

Before we lived in Minnesota, DH and I lived in Florida for 3 years. By the end of our time there, our ac was set to come on at 80.

It's amazing what you can get used to.

It's that way with so much in life. Everyone has a different take on "normal"---how a family relates to one another; what your financial priorities are; how you spend your free time; how people dress.

And then there is stress. It can build over months, or years, and for the longest time it seems "normal" until there is a breaking point.

I hit that breaking point two weeks ago. I'm beginning to heal, with the help of great friends, but it is a slow process. My life has been disrupted in so many ways and writing has suffered.

It wasn't until I began to climb out of the dark hole I've been in that I started to realize how deep the hole was, and how long I've been falling. It wasn't until life became less painful that I understood how much pain there was.

I'm not sure when I will get out of the hole, or what "normal" will feel like then, but I am looking forward to finding out what life will be like.

I don't watch many movies. I almost never see a movie in the theater, so the Oscars don't hold my attention. This year, I think the only movie I've seen that's up for a major award is WALL E.

But I do read. I read a lot. And I was thinking, if they gave Oscars for books, who would I have nominated for books I've read in the past year? Not necessarily ones that were PUBLISHED in the past year, because I don't always get books as soon as they come out.

Thankful Thursday 2/19/09

If you have been following the blog this week, you won't be surprised that my Thankful Thursday post is regarding my friend's son Henry.

Short recap:
Henry was injured on a church skiing trip last weekend. He was airlifted to a hospital, and was in an ICU, in a coma. Things looked grim , and his parents were given low expectations for his future.

Then, he woke up. He demanded his cell phone. He began eating and drinking. Monday he will be transferred to a local rehabilitation center. It is amazing how a near-tragedy has become cause for celebration.

I am going to continue this blog, but may not post again until next week. I want to try to concentrate on completing a short story and submitting it. I have had several distractions in my personal life that I want to think through and a week off the internet should give me a little time to think and plan what I'm going to do in this next stage of my life.

I hope to report back with some new short-term goals next week.

I have shared some of the emotional roller coaster ride regarding our friend's son, Henry. He sustained a very serious head injury while skiing this past weekend.

He woke up today, and like any self-respecting teenager, he demanded his phone (he even held out a hand for it) and complained he was hungry. There was much rejoicing.

Now to put it in perspective---

A few hours earlier, Henry's parents were confronted by three specialists who had reviewed his brain scan, and agreed that Henry had a 90% chance of never waking up. They counseled his family to prepare for the worst--a lifetime in a care facility and very little hope for improvement.

Then Henry wanted his cell phone.

We have been celebrating all afternoon over Henry's progress, but as I write this, my heart goes out to the families of the other 90%. If only more outcomes were as promising as Henry's.

I'll keep you posted.

My friend's son, Henry, is breathing on his own and starting to show other signs of waking up. Thank you all for your prayers and kind words. He's not out of the woods yet, but things sure look better than they did this time yesterday. I feel like I've been holding my breath for days, and can finally breath.

There is something so helpful in sharing news, good and bad.

Caring Bridge

Here on the internet, between LOLcats and rambling blogs, is a special place that provides a service which can only be accomplished online. It is the Caring Bridge.

I found out about it in the worst of ways--a friend's son was seriously injured last weekend, on a church ski trip. He has a head injury and is in a coma. I can barely see the screen through the tears.

Beautiful, athletic, funny, intelligent--and now paralyzed on one side. In a coma. Not breathing on his own. This is the kind of tragedy you hear about and think, "How sad." When it becomes a part of your world, life as you know it will NEVER be the same.

I can't do anything right now to help this family heal, but I can spread the word about a wonderful, and free, service that is helping my friends stay connected, and helping them share updates.

What the internet does best---spread the word.

Baby is so brave now, that he doesn't need to hide under the table. We've had him almost 10 months, and he's finally feeling at home.

The office. It looks about the same as the last update. Most of the work in the past two weeks has been plumbing, electrical and duct-work. We have our electrical walk-through this week, and things will start moving along after that.

A few updates.......

What a week. Both kids sick with strep, and I'm trying to catch up from being gone last weekend. I have done no real bogging (sorry, I miss my online friends), or writing, since last week. Cabin fever abounds. I did see THE DUCHESS to keep myself from going nuts, but I hated the movie. I don't usually blog about movies or books I dislike. This one just didn't work for me.

The conference was great. I still need to devote a real blog entry to it. Hopefully, that will happen this weekend. I need to tell everyone about the great authors I met, and some new ideas I have.

Construction update: No pictures (will post some this weekend), but things are happening. Walls are going up, the geothermal unit will be hooked up in a couple of weeks. We are still using the temporary electric radiators. I dread our Feb electric bill. They have dug a trench from the 6 wells to the house, and broke through the wall yesterday. The one window that needed to be moved has been moved. Our new couch is in, and they're going to hold it for us. Completion date is 5/5. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I loved participating in OWOH and plan on doing it again next year.

Yesterday was my dig-in-dirt day. I get to start thinking about the outdoor garden in two months. Too long to wait, so I needed a plant fix. I went to my favorite garden center and replaced all of my (indoor) herbs that died while we were gone over Christmas, and a couple other plants that bit the dust (again, pictures this weekend). I'm planning which plants will go where when the remodeling is done. That's as much fun as planning the furniture.

I saved the best for last---I'm out of my walking cast. Yea me. It still hurts some if I'm on my foot all day. No high heels for several more weeks, but no clunky cast, either. I ditched it for the conference last weekend, but needed it for a few days after I got home. Now it's in the closet.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

Posting a little early for Thankful Thursday. Tomorrow is a very busy day.

Today I was reminded how thankful I am for .........Books.

Here is my sometimes-quiet-corner, where I like to sip tea, and explore a new life in a novel.

Books are on my mind today because of our remodeling project. Since the laundry room is being moved, our laundry chute has to be relocated, too. It is going from beside our dresser, in a corner, to the closet in our bathroom.

Out of sight, yes! The carpenter in my bedroom (to get to the bathroom) uh oh. Gotta do some quick clean-up before he comes.

In this case, a quick clean-up involves hiding our stash of books. They are on the bedside tables, on the headboard, on the footboard, and stacked on the floor next to the bed. Really.

Here is the edited TBR pile for my DH.....

Sooooo......This is what I cleared off the nightstands, headboard, footboard, and floor in our room:

That's right, an ENTIRE LAUNDRY BASKET FULL OF BOOKS! I hid them in our sons' room (they're sharing a room during construction) and as I was stuffing the books in the basket, I was reminded how much reading means to our family. When the architect asked what we wanted in our redone space, DH and I shouted, "Lots of bookshelves!"

We all read a lot. We love books, and give them as gifts. We inherited a fantastic library from my F-I-L and bought a special bookcase for his books.

I can't imagine going through life without books. I have explored the frozen seas with Shackelton, traveled to distant galaxies with Miles Vorkosigan, gone back in time to Hawaii before European contact, and helped to hunt down a murderer in New Jersey all in the past week.

And who snuggles up with us when we read before bed?

The shelties, of course.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

My book of the week is SOME LIKE IT HOT BUTTERED by Jeffery Cohen.

Laugh-out-loud funny, with a great mystery. The murder is "off the page" so there is no gore, and the "romance" part is sweet.

I love the "voice" of this writer. He's smart, funny, and great at portraying believable characters. I love his references to old movies. Now I'll have to request them from the library.

His humor was perfect for me. The arctic blast, hobbling on a cast, and my DH gone for a week had put me in a winter funk. This book lifted me right out. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered his other books, too. I need some humor in my life.

I checked and they have all of his books at our library, too.

I am thankful for music, and violin music in particular.

My sons have played violin since they were very little, and it is such a joy for me to hear them play. After dinner is practice time. It is one of the most special times of my day. They are classically trained, but they play American and Swedish fiddle music, too.

Contemplating Change

I watched the inauguration yesterday with my kids, and was so proud of my country. We had a transition from one major political party to the other. Peacefully. With a million people in the streets--not to riot, but to celebrate.

Eight years ago, a President was inaugurated who lost the popular vote, but was judged to have won the electoral vote. There was no need for martial law, or suspension of elections, to have the transition.

Now, this is not a political blog, so I'm not going to wax poetic on which inauguration sent me to the moon, but I WILL say how thrilled I am that these transitions take place peacefully.

Four or eight years from now, someone else will be sworn in, and perhaps from the party not in power now. I expect that to go on without hysteria, too.

I am so thankful to live in a country where this can take place. We can vote without fear of violence. We can have transfer of power from one major party to another without civil war. I don't have to fear change. I know my vote counts. I can speak out against politicians and not fear loss of life or liberty.

I wanted to put this up yesterday, but was not feeling up to posting.

My sons have seen this so many times, they have memorized much of the speech.

As the mother of Asian-American children, this has a special meaning for me. I pray that the world will be a better place when they are adults. And I hope that they are part of the reason the world is a better place.

My new look for the next couple of weeks. Stylish, isn't it?

I tripped over the step stool in the kitchen last night. I can't even blame a cat on this one, just me being a klutz.

The xray this morning shows two breaks in the base of the fourth toe on my right foot. The foot looks like it has been tie-died.

Ice and tylenol are in my future.

TEN THINGS I LOVE, THAT BEGIN WITH the letter "F".......

1. FAMILY--see my THANKFUL THURSDAY POST.

2. FRIENDS--I have been blessed with wonderful friends.

3. FORGIVENESS--what a wonderful thing to receive, and give.

4. FREEDOM. Living in the U.S., I have so much freedom--more than most people in history, and more than many people in other countries. I don't want to turn this into a political post, but I am grateful, and mindful, of the freedom I enjoy.

5. FICTION-- reading it and writing it. I can't imagine life without stories.

6. FLOWERS. I love to see them, smell them, and even eat them---yes, there are many edible flowers, and I have a section of my garden devoted to them.

7. FUR--when it's still connected to a critter: the silky fur on Mr. Whiskers; the lush coat of Skitter Kitten; the magnificent ruff of Scooby; the resplendent pelage of Baby.

8. FRUIT. Since Christmas, I have eaten fruit with every meal. Mango, papaya, grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, pear, persimmon, pomegranate, orange, banana...........

9. FIREFLIES--they are summer, and childhood dreams.

10. FLANNEL SHEETS. Trust me, when it's -24, you'd love them, too.

Over at Rhondi’s blog, it is THANKFUL THURSDAY, so I'm going to join the fun.

I have so many reasons to be thankful, not only today, but every day. I'll hit the high points:

I have a husband who is wonderful. My mother told me the day I married him if she had been able to choose who I was to marry, she would have picked him. Her opinion, and mine, have not changed in two decades.

I am blessed with two fabulous children. The journey to parenthood was a long a difficult one. We were married over five years before our first son arrived. Three years later, our family was complete with our second son. Now that they're in the teen and tween years, I am still thankful, every day, for the privilege of being their mother.

We have everything in life we need--- a secure job, a safe home, a church we love, excellent schools, and (mostly) good health and wonderful family and friends.

I have the opportunity to pursue writing as a career. This has been a dream of mine for years, and now I am doing it full-time, or as full-time as anything can be with a husband, two kids, and various other responsibilities.

Thanks for letting me join your THANKFUL THURSDAY, RHONDI.

The concrete is out. Insulation should be installed this week, I hope. A new floor over that is due next week. So.....the dust, dirt, and noise are GOOD THINGS, I keep telling myself.

TWENTY BELOW--THAT' S FAHRENHEIT, FOLKS

"Is it cold enough for you?"

That will be the greeting of the day. It was twenty below (for those of you who haven't had coffee--it's FIFTY-TWO below freezing) when we got up this morning. Minus 38, with windchill.

The dogs look at us like it's our fault.

The conventional answer is, "It could be worse."

And it has been. January 1996, it was THIRTY-FOUR BELOW. That is not windchill, but actual air temperature. Schools state-wide were closed--for cold.

This is why you hear about "Minnesota nice"----you never know who you will need to jump start your car or push you out of a snowbank.

Twenty below---it's what makes us Minnesotans.

Reading is on the Rise

According to a new report from THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, reading is on the rise! This is great news for writers and book-lovers.

When people are reading, they are buying books. Writers have a better chance of selling their work if publishers know the readers are out there. So....

Readers will have a larger selection of books.

Good news for everyone.

THE PRICE by Alexandra Sokoloff

If the classification of "HORROR" tends to call up images of slasher movies and badly written books, think again.

One of my New Year's resolutions was to read outside of my comfort zone (mysteries, literary fiction, and SF are my staples for fiction) and this was the first book on my list. I took it with me on my vacation. I haven't read much horror since high school, but I had the pleasure of meeting Alex in San Francisco at RWA, and I enjoy her posts on craft at MURDERATI, so I took THE PRICE along.

I was glad I did.

The story was heart-rending and disturbing---in a good way. It made me think, "What would I be willing to do to save my DH or my kids?"

I love it when a book moves me and makes me think.

Many years ago, I worked in a Childrens' hospital, and found Alex's portrayal of that environment nuanced and accurate. I hate to discuss the plot more, because I don't want to ruin one minute of your enjoyment discovering the story yourself.

What have you read recently outside your "comfort zone" and did you like it? What makes you pick up a new author's book? What is in your to-be-read pile?

Dh has been down with a stomach bug---I promise, no details----so we're going out tonight to celebrate my birthday.

Before kids, we'd celebrate New Year's Eve and my birthday together (my birthday's the third), but that hasn't happened in years. Now, we do a nice dinner out and are home early.

Each time we go out to a nice place (for birthdays or anniversaries) we find ourselves seated next to DRAMA. First date disasters; obviously bored couples; little kids who are up way past their bedtimes; and the worst--- business travelers who mistake the dining room for their office and have laptop and papers strewn over the table and who shout into their cellphone while we try to whisper sweet nothings.

I wish I could write romantic comedy; there is so much material in our "dates."

So, happy belated birthday to me.

This year is a BIG birthday for my DH (in the fall), so I may throw a surprise party for him. I would hate to have have one thrown for me, though.

How do you celebrate your birthday? Do you enjoy a fancy dinner out? Have you experienced dining disasters? What's your opinion about surprise parties?

Someone in need

My sister's family experienced a tragedy 4 years ago. They had an electrical fire and due to smoke and water damage, lost the entire contents of their home. They were safe, all the pets were rescued, but they literally only had the clothes on their backs.

It took almost a year to rebuild, but the loss continues to this day: Photos that can never be replaced, the rocking chair that had been in the family for four generations, hand-written recipes from our grandmother, my nephew's guitar collection which was not covered by the insurance, my niece's doll collection from all over the world.

They rebuilt, moved on, and still grieve.

That is why when I read about author Travis Erwin and his family's loss, I wanted to help and help spread the word.

He, his wife, and kids are safe, but I'm sure you can only imagine how awful it must be to loose EVERYTHING.

Spelling Bee

AS the only one in the family who can spell without spell check, Bug Boy easily made it into the school spelling bee. DH and I decided to be fairly hands-off and let him enjoy the experience. There was no cramming, no flashcards or word lists. We went over the expectations last night and put him to bed a little early.

After eight rounds, with fourteen contestants, he won. Now I wonder, is this a blessing or a curse? Do we prepare for the district round, or leave it alone?

Anyone out there have experience with spelling bees? How about advice for the parent who doesn't want to be ONE OF THOSE PARENTS? Can you spell without spell check?

And that's why we call him....

BUG BOY!

My youngest son got his glasses when he was two. When we came home from the eye doctor's office, we headed straight for the park. The first thing he noticed were the ants--he could not see them before he got glasses. He's been "BUG BOY" ever since. As soon as he could pronounce it, he told me he was going to be an entomologist.

I had never considered New Orleans as a family vacation destination, but this changed my mind. Our school district has a five day weekend in October, and I think the the Audubon Insectarium will be our first stop.

BTW, that's a praying mantis on his head. I screamed; he insisted on a picture.
